01 — Empathize
Problem Context
Equinox members pay for a premium in-club experience, but independent (non-class) lifters often feel under-supported by the Equinox+ app. From my secondary research and six member interviews, I found:
I. The app is widely used for check-in, but not for strength tracking.
II. Users want sets/reps/weight logging, progress feedback, and light accountability.
III. The current experience looks premium but lacks the functional depth independent lifters expect.
Key insights
I: Tracking gap: “I can’t log my sets and reps; I use spreadsheets or third-party apps.”
II. Motivation gap: “The app doesn’t motivate me; I need visible progress.”
III. Ease gap: “Check-in is easy, but everything else feels slow or hidden.”
IV. Premium expectation gap: “It looks glossy, but it isn’t smart.”
02 — Define
Journey pinch points
Pre-gym: no plan or suggestions
|
In-session: no fast logging; no pacing support
|
Post-workout: weak payoff; little feedback or recognition
03 — Ideate
MVP
Given the time constraint of this project, I decided to pursue a MVP with minimal interface, guided by muscle group, ease of use, and elegant progress visualization.
